Editor's Review & How To Play
Fire Emblem Heroes players may visit up to 100 different controllable units in the game, and players can start by visiting Alfonse, Sharena and Anna. The "Heroic Order" of these three members of the specially created heroes, with controllable characters for the rest of the crossover from the franchise. Since its release, other characters have been added to the list, including those that did not appear in the game before. In general, most characters are obtained through the "Call of Duty" tab, which applies to the Twister system. Jewels are spent on random heroes, some of which are common and some of which are rare. Other heroes can be obtained for free by completing in-game quests of varying difficulty and effort. If players obtain copies of the same character, they can merge copies to create a more powerful character.
Fire Emblem Heroes is a tactical role-playing game. Players control a team of up to four characters ("heroes") against enemy teams of varying sizes on an 8x6 grid map. Different characters have different movement restrictions; for example, armored units have a shorter range than cavalry units, but cavalry units cannot enter forest cells. Flying units can enter most units, even those that all other units cannot pass, such as water or mountains. The game alternates strictly between the player phase and the enemy phase each turn. During the player phase, the hero can attack enemy characters within range; if the attacking and defending sides have the same range, the defending side will counterattack if it is still alive. Heroes deal either physical or magical damage types; they also have a "color" that informs a rock-paper-scissors style system, giving certain units an advantage over others. After moving and choosing to attack with all heroes, the enemy phase occurs and the game's AI does the same thing to the team of enemy characters. Generally, players draw enemy units into unfavorable matchups by carefully positioning their characters on the map. Unlike other Fire Emblem games, there is no element of randomness or chance in combat; engagements between two characters are completely deterministic, as is the enemy AI, so a given strategy either wins or loses. Fire Emblem Heroes has a set of chapter-by-chapter "story" quests for players to complete, rotating challenge quests, training towers to increase character power in random battles, and battles against other players' teams (albeit controlled by the game's AI) in "arenas " and "Ether Raid", special challenges involving "brigades" where teams of eight or more characters are controlled on a larger map than usual, and various other content to complete.
